Our Impact
Supporting a Growing Spiritual Community
“A healthier body supports a calmer mind. A nourished mind can contemplate the Dhamma.”
Every day, Jetavanarama Buddhist Monastery serves as a place of learning, practice, spiritual development, and guidance for a growing community of monks, anagarikas, practitioners, volunteers, school children, devotees, and visitors.
For decades, the monastery has provided an environment where individuals can learn the Dhamma, cultivate wisdom, develop inner peace, and work towards liberation from suffering.
As the monastery continues to grow and serve more people, ensuring a consistent and sustainable food supply becomes increasingly important.
Haritha Saṅgrāmaya was established to help support these long-term food sustainability needs through cultivation, agricultural development, water sustainability initiatives, and food security projects.
Our Impact
250+ Resident Monks
The monastery is home to approximately 250 resident monks who dedicate their lives to studying, practising, preserving, and teaching the Dhamma.
Their daily lives are devoted to meditation, learning, spiritual practice, teaching, and supporting the continuation of the Buddha Sasana.
150+ Resident Anagarikas
Approximately 150 resident anagarikas live and train within the monastery environment.
They dedicate themselves to spiritual practice, service, discipline, and preparation for deeper monastic training.
400+ Daily Practitioners, Volunteers & Devotees
Each day, practitioners, volunteers, and devotees contribute their time and effort in supporting monastery activities while developing their own spiritual practice.
Their service helps create the conditions that allow the monastery to function and continue serving others.
200+ School Children
More than 200 school children study within the monastery environment, receiving education, guidance, and opportunities for personal development.
Supporting sustainable food security helps ensure a stable environment for their learning and wellbeing.
2,000+ Weekend & Special Event Visitors
Throughout the year, thousands of visitors attend meditation retreats, Dhamma discussions, spiritual programs, and religious observances at Jethavanarama Buddhist Monastery.
During weekends and major religious events, visitor numbers may exceed 2,000 people.
Many travel from across Sri Lanka and around the world seeking peace, wisdom, meditation, spiritual guidance, and a deeper understanding of the Dhamma.
Why Food Security Matters
Behind every meditation retreat, Dhamma sermon, spiritual program, and daily practice is a simple but essential requirement:
Wholesome Food
Every day, meals are prepared to support resident monks, anagarikas, practitioners, volunteers, school children, and visitors.
As the monastery continues to expand its service to the community, sustainable food production becomes increasingly important.
Rather than relying solely on short-term food donations, Haritha Saṅgrāmaya seeks to support long-term solutions through:
-
-
- Sustainable cultivation projects
- Paddy cultivation
- Fruit, vegetable, and coconut cultivation
- Water and irrigation systems
- Agricultural infrastructure
- Farming equipment and operational resources
- Long-term food sustainability initiatives
